Governor Culver Announces 2009 Volunteering in America rannkings |

(Des Moines) Today, Governor Chet Culver announced that Iowa ranks 5th in the nation for volunteer service rates, and Iowa City,Waterloo and Des Moines are among the top 10 cities in a report released by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Iowa was the only state to have three cities in the top ten overall rankings; additionally, Cedar Rapids ranked 14th among mid-sized cities.
In the annual report, Volunteering in America: 2009 State and City Trends and Rankings, Iowa has a volunteer rate of 37.1% and moved up 1 spot from last year. Three locales in Iowa rank in the top 10 list for US cities.
* Iowa City is ranked 2nd overall with a volunteer rate of 49.2%.
* Waterloo is ranked 6th overall with a volunteer rate of 39.3%.
* Des Moines is ranked 10th overall (9th for mid-size cities) with a volunteer rate of 38.2%.
* Cedar Rapids ranked 17th overall (14th for mid-size cities) with a volunteer rate of 36.3%.
Approximately 886,000 adults volunteered in Iowa in 2008, compared to 858,300 in 2007 - an increase of 3 percent. Much of the increase is attributed to a significant rise in the rate of college volunteerism, which is up 11.6% from last year – an increase from 17th to 6th in rankings for that demographic. Iowa ranks in the top 6 in all demographic groups.
